Hey everyone,

Hope you are doing well! Today we’ll talk about something very important and close to my heart. PCOS! Let’s get started…

PCOD? PCOS? What? Same thing or different? Girls Problem Ahh! Wohi na jo Sara Ali Khan ko tha? Wo to sunna tha. Pata nahi kya hota hai! Anyway hume kya! Most of us think like that! You will be surprised to know that 90% of people I know had absolutely no idea about the existence of such a thing. Ok, here’s the thing, I am a media student and my fellow would-be journalists in both my graduation and post graduation level were ignorant about the same. A very few were aware and less than a handful were sensitive regarding PCOD.

Most of us are like why should we be aware about everything and mostly the things that don’t concern us? What is the need, I am a man, I am a fit lady! I won’t have!

But guys waise toh you peeps are interested in all kinds of gossip, ready to voice an opinion about any news story or anybody’s life decisions. Then why not get curious about a disorder that has the capacity to damage someone’s life? If you are a man wondering why you should know about this, then boy you are privileged to not get the disorder but your girlfriend, friend, sister might. Hence, need you be aware and sensitive.

So, I got to know about the existence of such a thing back in 2015, while scrolling through my favourite youtubers’ feed and then I came across their stories. I didn’t do my research then because just like you guys, I thought, since, I don’t have such symptoms, so why bother. Let me get back to watching make up stuff. But little did I know, God had some other plans. In 2018, I was suffering from a lot of issues. I was having these horrible mood swings, I was behaving weirdly, being extremely sensitive and extremely rude at times. I was confused, getting painful cystic pimples and what not! I went to a doc and she said it’s an allergy and I have sinus, dust allergy, so I agreed. Had meds and it was all fine. Again after a few weeks, I got the symptoms back, mainly, acne! Some said it’s because of makeup and too much skincare. I stopped using fancy things but to know avail. Some said it’s the food and I tried to avoid a few things and the symptoms reduced but as soon I got back to my normal lifestyle, acne reappeared.

Finally, I was too tired with my acne story and went to another dermatologist. She took look and instantly confirmed that I have PCOD. And I thought how is this possible, as I am not over-weight neither I have too much body hair, nor, my periods are irregular! She said you have all of these symptoms but at a low level now, that’s why you aren’t experiencing the changes yet. She said carefully think, aren’t you gaining weight? Aren’t you having more facial hair growth than normal? Aren’t you having craving more than before? Are you really having periods on time? Think about it! I couldn’t deny. I went through a lot of tests, utlra sound and it was confirmed.

PCOD or PCOS is a lifestyle disorder. Polycystic Ovarian Disorder or Syndrome is quite common in young females. It can trigger many disorders if not discovered timely and taken care of.

According to an article in the telegraph

‘Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) or Polycystic Ovarian Disease (PCOD) is common among members of the younger generation, with almost 10 million people affected globally. Its worldwide prevalence varies from 2.2 per cent to 26 per cent and, according to latest statistics, in India one in every four young women is said to have PCOD. The disease is said to affect urban population more than rural folks, which means, as we become more educated and improve our socio-economic status, we are becoming unhealthier ‘.

So, I was living alone in Delhi and my lifestyle was literally all over the place. The food, the sleep pattern, the traveling, you know, all of the usual things we all do while we live alone or even when we enter a hectic schedule of college life. It wasn’t only me who was having ‘not so proper’ lifestyle, but it was me who got detected with PCOD. Therefore, even though, many of your friends have a horrible lifestyle, still they might not get PCOD. So, always go for a test and then decide for yourself.

Symptoms of PCOS –

  1. Absent or irregular periods. Heavy flow, spotting, it can get delayed by a week too (in my case) .

  2. Acne or pimples. Painful and cystic acne all over the face, especially, near your chin, jawline. Excessive oil production.

  3. Elevated male hormones, abnormal hair growth on the face, chest, back and abdomen. Loss of scalp hair or loss of hair from one spot only.

  4. An ultrasound showing polycystic ovaries. These are the small cysts that are found in your ovaries which causes hormonal imbalance.

  5. Weight gain, obesity.

  6. Infertility or difficulty in pregnancy.

PCOS & MENTAL Health – I will an article separately on this topic.

  1. PCOS affects mental health the most! It can trigger anxiety and lead to depression. The hormonal imbalance causes mood swings and leads to overthinking and emotional outbreaks all the time. Therefore, people with PCOS need to pay extra attention towards their mental health also.

PCOD takes a toll on your Mental Health.

Why do you get PCOD?

It can be because of several reasons, I am no expert to state the reason but commonly a stressful lifestyle, irregular sleeping pattern, too much of unhealthy eating, zero exercise, etc can some of the reasons. Some researchers blames genes also, in case your family has then it can transfer to you. Basically, whatever We Urban ladies do in our daily lives can trigger PCOS.

PCOS and It’s side-effects:

PCOS can be dangerous, if you neglect your body’s signals. It causes obesity, which triggers many underlying illness.

It is also said that PCOD develops insulin resistance leading to type-2-diabetes. It also causes cardiovascular diseases. By the way PCOS if not treated can also lead to Cancer.

Treatment

I won’t be able to explain this aspect as for me it was several blood tests and ultra sound to the presence. And treatment included lifestyle changes, exercise, diet, meditation and some vitamins suppliments. For pimples she suggested some medicated creams and facewash. That’s all. I didn’t eat any pills for any symptoms cause I and my doctor both belived that a proper lifestyle change can do wonders.

I still have PCOS, I still suffer, sometimes, it is unbearable but sometimes I take good care of myself and don’t experience harsh symptoms. You need to be consistant with your sleep and eat pattern. You need to eat healthy, sleep on time, exercise, avoid stress and stay away from toxic people and energies.

I will write a separate article for the lifestyle change and how to take care of yourself part. But in short, you need to consult a doctor, get proper diagnosis and then apt for the treatment. Don’t ignore the signs of your body. An early detection can also lead to a complete cure of this disorder. A proper lifestyle change that is adopting a healthy lifestyle can actually cure the disorder from it’s root.

I am having PCOS and it comes with a lot of stigmas. We will discuss about everything slowly. For today’s blog, I Just wanted to write down about the cause and symptoms. I wanted to address the topic to aware you people and try to bring sensitivity amongst my readers. A lot of topics are left to discuss about PCOS, which I will talk about in my next blog.

Till then, happy reading!

Hope you share this blog with your friends and familes to help me create awarness about this less spoken topic

About Cactus & Sunflower

"Cactus & Sunflower" is  Grishma Satpathy's new venture in the digital space. The name comes from her deep relation

with her grandmother and the impressions of cactus and sunflower in their lives. As a child she used to share all her curiosities

about the plants with her 'MAA'. Her grandmother believed that 'Grishma' and 'Sunflower' have so much in common;

both are associated with sun and is the ultimate source of light. She always said Grishma to always make sure to carry

that light within yourself wherever you go and whatever you do.
